The Egg: everything before anything flies
Twelve days, compressed for a fast learner. At the end you'll have a working tilt sensor, a PID controller you understand from the equations up, a measured thrust curve, a designed and ordered v1 drone board, and a public build log on your own domain. Nothing flies yet. That's the point: every mistake made here costs nothing.
1Do this today
The site
dronebee.shreyanbuilds.com is built (static Worker in site/) and goes live as soon as you approve the deploy. Today: also email AirSoc + ArIES and register on the Tinkering Lab portal (§11).
Place the order
§5. Parts take 3–6 days to reach you and they're your bottleneck, so order before you learn anything. Check two shops for XIAO stock.
Install the tools
§7 has copy-paste commands. Your Mac already has Homebrew, uv, git, GitHub CLI and VS Code. Missing: KiCad, PlatformIO, the Python libraries and OpenSCAD.
2Your domain
I checked every name below directly against the .com registry (Verisign RDAP) on 25 Oct 2026. "Free" means nobody had registered it at that moment.
Egg to Queen is the whole roadmap in three words: v0 Egg → v5 Queen. It's unusual, it's memorable, and it's a story people can follow. Post titles write themselves ("Egg · Day 3: teaching a computer to balance", "Larva · first hover"). When the swarm arrives, the Hive is the finale.
The project-____.com format you wanted. The waggle dance is how a honeybee tells the hive where it found food. It's a bee's way of documenting and sharing, which is exactly what this site is. And v6 has a "waggle dance" feature.
"Hatch to Hive" covers the full arc, from the first solder joint to the swarm. It's easy to say out loud, which helps on YouTube and Instagram.

| Name | Idea |
|---|---|
projectbombus.com | Bombus is the scientific name of the bumblebee genus. It sounds like a lab codename. |
projectdronebee.com | Male honeybees are literally called drones. A fun fact baked into the name. |
projectthorax.com | The thorax is where a bee's flight muscles live. Nerdy and short. |
projectcomb.com | The honeycomb hexagon is a strong visual logo. Very short. |
buildingabee.com · beefromscratch.com · zerotobee.com | Plain-English journey names, good for search. |
swarmfromscratch.com · eggtohive.com · 4cmbee.com · projectbzz.com | Other usable options. |
Already taken, so don't waste time on them: projectbee, project-bee, projectbuzz, projecthive, projectqueen, projectapis, projectmelissa, projectpollen, projectnectar, zerotoqueen, dronebee, thedronebee, buzzlabs, hiveforge.
- Registrar: Cloudflare Registrar sells at cost, with no markup on renewals and free WHOIS privacy. It uses Cloudflare DNS, which we want anyway for free hosting. A .com is roughly US$10–12 a year, so check the exact price at checkout. Porkbun is a good alternative. Avoid "₹99 first year" deals that renew at 10× the price.
- Turn on auto-renew and 2-factor login on the registrar account. Losing the domain later is painful.
- Then tell me and we'll set up the site together (§8): about 45 minutes, free hosting, posts written in Markdown in your project repo.
3What the Egg produces
The Egg is done when every box below is ticked. Each item is something you can show someone, not a feeling.
| Deliverable | The test | Why it matters later |
|---|---|---|
| Python 1-axis simulator + your PID | You predict the overshoot from the damping ratio before running it, and the plot agrees | Every controller in v1–v6 gets tried here first |
| XIAO reading the IMU at 500 Hz | Flat: az = 1.00 ± 0.05 g. 99% of loops within ±20 µs of 2000 µs | This exact loop becomes the flight loop |
| Complementary + Mahony filters, 3D cube viewer | < 1° drift in 5 min still. Settles within 1 s after shaking | A wrong sign here = a flip on the first take-off |
| One motor channel (MOSFET + diode) on perfboard | Smooth 0–100%, nothing warm, ESP32 never resets | v1 has four identical copies |
| Measured thrust curve | T(u) plot with a fitted law T = a·uⁿ and your Tmax | Every weight budget and motor choice uses it |
| v1 board designed + ordered | ERC/DRC clean, reviewed, ordered, and the props clear a printed dummy frame | It arrives just as v1 starts |
| Public build log | Your domain live with ≥ 6 posts, plus one short video | The documentation is half the project |
4The 12-day plan
setup = admin and tools · software = no parts needed · hardware = needs the parts. Days 2–4 are deliberately software-only so shipping time isn't wasted. If parts arrive early, swap days around. If they're late, see §10.
5Shopping list (real listings, 25 Oct 2026)

6Learning path: the minimum effective dose
For each topic: one resource, the exact part to consume, and what to pull out of it. Everything was link-checked on 25 Oct 2026. You already have the physics and maths, so most of this is practical translation: how the textbook ideas show up in real parts.
- Just-in-time: learn a topic the morning you need it, never weeks ahead. The plan already orders it that way.
- Watch at 1.5×, and only the listed part. Pause when you can predict what comes next.
- Do the matching step within the hour. Knowledge that isn't used the same day is mostly gone in a week.
- Explain it back to me in your own words. I'll find the gaps.
- One line in
docs/cheatsheet.mdper idea. By the end of the Egg it's your own textbook.
| Day | Topic | Best resource | Pull out of it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Git in 15 min | MIT Missing Semester: Version Control | commit, branch, push. Commit every time something works. |
| 1 | The big picture | Carbon Aeronautics manual (skim) | How a hobbyist went from zero to a flying quad. Read it like a map, not a textbook. |
| 2 | Simulating a drone | MATLAB: Drone Simulation & Control parts 1–2 | Why you model before you build, and what "plant", "actuator" and "sensor" mean in a control loop. |
| 2 | NumPy + Matplotlib | NumPy quickstart · Matplotlib quick start | Arrays, vectorised maths, one plot with two y-axes. That's all the sim needs. |
| 3 | PID intuition | MATLAB: Understanding PID Control parts 1–4 (46 min) | What each term does, and why D needs filtering. |
| 3 | PID that works in real code | Brett Beauregard: Improving the Beginner's PID | Derivative kick, reset windup and fixed sample time. Exactly the three tricks in master plan §5.4. |
| 4 | Reading datasheets | Phil's Lab #123 (21 min) | Absolute maximum vs recommended ratings, and where the real numbers hide (graphs, footnotes). |
| 4 | Schematics + breadboards | SparkFun: How to Read a Schematic | Symbols, nets and reference designators (R1, Q1, D1). |
| 4 | MOSFET from 3.3 V logic | DigiKey MOSFET guide (8 min) · GreatScott EB#23 (6 min) | Check RDS(on) at your gate voltage. Their guide suggests 1 kΩ gate + 100 kΩ pull-down. We use 100 Ω + 10 kΩ for faster switching at 20 kHz and a firmer "off". Both are valid. |
| 4, 10–11 | KiCad | Official Getting Started in KiCad 10 (current: 10.0.7, native on Apple Silicon) | The full loop: schematic → footprints → layout → DRC → Gerbers. Do it once on the tutorial board, then on yours. (The popular 2018 DigiKey series is KiCad 4, so skip it.) |
| 5 | Soldering | EEVblog #183 through-hole → #186 SMD (tools: #180) | Heat the pad not the solder. Flux is your friend. What a good, shiny, concave joint looks like. |
| 5 | I²C | SparkFun: I2C (12 min) | Open-drain + pull-ups, addresses, register reads (write register address, then read N bytes). |
| 5 | Your board + toolchain | Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 wiki · RNT: PlatformIO for ESP32 | Pinout, boot button, upload. PlatformIO board id is seeed_xiao_esp32s3 (confirmed). |
| 5 | Reading the MPU-6050 | Carbon Aeronautics #4 (8 min) + #5 calibration (4 min) | Raw register reads with Wire, the way a 500 Hz loop needs them. (The RNT tutorial uses a library, which is fine for a first check, too slow for later.) |
| 6 | Complementary filter | Brian Douglas: Drone Control and the Complementary Filter (11 min) | Gyro = high-pass, accel = low-pass, and α sets the crossover. You'll see it's just a first-order filter pair. |
| 7 | Quaternions | 3Blue1Brown (6 min) → eater.net/quaternions | Why 4 numbers beat 3 angles (no gimbal lock), and q·v·q* rotates a vector. |
| 7 | Mahony / Madgwick | Madgwick's report §2–3 · reference code: x-io Fusion (also pip install imufusion) | The quaternion derivative and the gravity-error correction. Use imufusion in Python as a "known good" answer to check your own filter against. |
| 9 | Measuring thrust | Bitcraze: PWM to Thrust (6 min) | The scale method on coreless motors, plus a real reference: a Crazyflie makes ≈ 58 g from 4 motors (bigger 47 mm props). |
| 10 | A real XIAO drone, for reference | Seeed ESP-FLY files | How someone else wired XIAO + MOSFETs + MPU-6050. Compare it with your schematic. |
- GreatScott! Electronic Basics: pick #1 multimeter, #9 diodes, #14 capacitors, #18 motors (5–7 min each).
- TI Understanding the I²C Bus (8-page PDF) for clean timing diagrams.
- dRehmFlight: a whole flight controller you can read in an evening.
- MATLAB Sensor Fusion part 2 (16 min), if you want the full IMU fusion picture.
Toolchain note: PlatformIO's official ESP32 platform v8.0.0 (released 19 Oct 2026) moved to Arduino core 3.3. If it misbehaves, the community fork pioarduino is the fallback, and I'll handle that with you if it comes up.
7Mac setup (copy-paste)
Already on your Mac: Homebrew, uv, git, GitHub CLI (gh), VS Code, Cursor, Node. Still needed: the Python libraries, PlatformIO, KiCad and OpenSCAD. Your system Python is 3.9, so we use uv to make a modern 3.12 environment just for this project.
1 · Python environment (for the simulator, plots and cube viewer)
cd ~/Projects/Personal/micro-drone
uv venv --python 3.12
source .venv/bin/activate
uv pip install numpy scipy matplotlib pyserial pygame jupyter
python -c "import numpy, scipy, matplotlib, serial, pygame; print('python ok')"
2 · VS Code + PlatformIO (for the XIAO firmware)
- In VS Code: Cmd+Shift+P → Shell Command: Install 'code' command in PATH.
- Then in Terminal:
code --install-extension platformio.platformio-ide
The first time PlatformIO opens it downloads its toolchain (a few minutes). The XIAO uses native USB, so no driver is needed on macOS.
3 · KiCad (PCB design) + OpenSCAD (3D parts written as code)
brew install --cask kicad openscad
Why OpenSCAD: you describe a part with numbers and maths (cylinder(r=3.6, h=3)), which suits you better than dragging shapes, and every dimension stays exact. The thrust stand, motor clips and dummy frame will all be OpenSCAD files we write together. Use your printer's own slicer to print them.
4 · The project repo
cd ~/Projects/Personal/micro-drone
git init
mkdir -p firmware sim ground hardware cad log docs site
cat > .gitignore <<'EOF'
.venv/
.pio/
.DS_Store
video/
*.mov
*.mp4
*-backups/
fp-info-cache
EOF
git add -A && git commit -m "Project Bee: plan, 3D model, Egg playbook"
gh auth login # once, if you haven't
gh repo create micro-drone --private --source=. --push
Keep it private for now. Make it public once the site is live, because open source is part of the story. Raw video stays out of git (it's in .gitignore). Big files go on YouTube or a drive.
5 · First firmware: prove the toolchain works (Day 5)
New PlatformIO project in firmware/egg, then replace platformio.ini with:
[env:xiao_esp32s3]
platform = espressif32
board = seeed_xiao_esp32s3
framework = arduino
monitor_speed = 115200
build_flags = -DARDUINO_USB_CDC_ON_BOOT=1 ; Serial goes over the USB-C port
src/main.cpp, blink + "alive". The XIAO's little orange LED is on GPIO21 and lights when the pin is LOW:
#include <Arduino.h>
void setup() { pinMode(LED_BUILTIN, OUTPUT); Serial.begin(115200); }
void loop() {
digitalWrite(LED_BUILTIN, LOW); delay(100); // on
digitalWrite(LED_BUILTIN, HIGH); delay(900); // off
Serial.println("alive");
}
Then the I²C scanner, the first thing to run once the IMU is wired. It should print found 0x68:
#include <Arduino.h>
#include <Wire.h>
void setup() {
Serial.begin(115200); delay(1500);
Wire.begin(5, 6); // SDA = GPIO5 (D4), SCL = GPIO6 (D5)
Wire.setClock(400000); // 400 kHz "fast mode"
for (uint8_t a = 1; a < 127; a++) {
Wire.beginTransmission(a);
if (Wire.endTransmission() == 0) Serial.printf("found 0x%02X\n", a);
}
}
void loop() {}
8Documenting the journey
The site (built 25 Oct)
site/build.mjs: Markdown posts insite/posts/→ HTML, RSS and sitemap. No framework, one dependency (marked).- A static Cloudflare Worker on dronebee.shreyanbuilds.com (the same pattern as your
byhproject).npm run deployships it. - Everything in
plans-and-details/is served as-is:/plan,/model,/egg. Visitors can spin your drone. - Its own security headers allow the 3D engine's CDN and YouTube embeds.
- Posts start as
draft: true. Flip it to publish.
The capture habit
- Daily log (private, 5 lines):
log/2026-10-25.md. - Photo before and after every solder job: close-up, good light, a ruler in frame.
- Screen-record every plot that tells a story (the PID runs, the thrust curve).
- Phone video of every "first": first blink, first data, first spin, first thrust reading.
- Write down every number (weights, currents, timings) with its date.
Daily log template
# 2026-10-25 · Egg · Day 1
- Did: bought eggtoqueen.com, placed Order A, installed tools
- Broke: PlatformIO couldn't find the board → needed a data cable
- Learned: why the XIAO needs ARDUINO_USB_CDC_ON_BOOT for Serial
- Numbers: —
- Next: simulator part 1 (open-loop physics)
Public post template (one per day, or every two days)

title: "Egg · Day 3: teaching a computer to balance"
date: 2026-10-27
phase: egg
---
**Goal:** what I wanted today, in one line.
**What I tried:** the steps, with photos / plots.
**What happened:** including what went wrong (people love the failures).
**The physics:** the one idea that made it click, with the equation.
**Numbers:** the measurements.
**Next:** tomorrow's goal.
Post ideas for the Egg: (1) "I'm building a 4 cm drone from zero, here's the 7-stage plan". (2) "Why the first version is 7 cm, not 4" (the box rule, D ≤ B/2). (3) "Teaching a computer to balance (PID in 100 lines)". (4) "First solder joints: the good, the bad, the blobby". (5) "Which way is up? Fusing a gyro and an accelerometer". (6) "How much can one tiny motor lift?" (7) "Designing my first PCB". (8) "Egg complete: what I'd tell myself on Day 1".
9Bench safety (Egg edition)
Soldering
- ≈ 330–350 °C for leaded solder.
- A fan pulling fumes away, and wash hands after (lead).
- Iron always in its stand. Glasses when clipping leads.
LiPo
- Charge in the LiPo bag at ≤ 1C, never unattended.
- Check BT2.0 polarity before the first plug-in.
- Battery + never goes to the XIAO's 5V pin. In the Egg it only powers the motor channel.
Props
- Props off until Day 9.
- Clamp or weigh down the thrust stand. Safety glasses on.
- Kill power by unplugging the battery, not by grabbing the prop.
10If parts are late
Shipping is the only thing you don't control, so here's how to keep moving:
- No parts by Day 5: move KiCad (Days 10–11) forward. You can design the v1 board from datasheets alone.
- Practise sensor fusion on real data with your phone. The free phyphox app (iOS and Android) records your phone's gyroscope and accelerometer and exports CSV. Write the complementary and Mahony filters in Python on that data. When the IMU arrives you port tested logic instead of debugging two things at once.
- Extend the simulator to a full 3D quadcopter (a stretch goal anyway): 4 motors, the mixer, roll/pitch/yaw. That's the v1 controller, tested before v1 exists.
- XIAO out of stock: any ESP32-S3 dev board works for the bench. The code is the same apart from pin numbers. Keep the real XIAO for v1.
11IIT Roorkee: your toolkit
Researched on 25 Oct 2026 from official iitr.ac.in pages, club sites and their GitHub. Things I couldn't confirm are marked unverified, so check those in person.
Tinkering Lab: your workshop
The facts
- Where: Hafiz Mohd. Ibrahim Building, opposite the Security Office. tinkeringlab@iitr.ac.in · tinkeringlab.iitr.ac.in (use http, the https certificate is broken)
- Who: open to all IITR students. Coordinator: Prof. Varun Sharma (MIED).
- Hours: 11 AM–7 PM, Mon–Fri (the current site). For after-hours work you can get a key for up to 3 days.
- Has: soldering stations, 3D printers, a 3D scanner, CNC/VMC, metal laser cutting, a tool room, workstations, 250+ items of inventory, and a cyber-physical systems studio with motion-capture cameras and drone kits.
- unverified printer models, hot air, oscilloscopes, bench supplies.
How to get in (do it on Day 1–2)
- Log in to the lab portal with your Channel i account.
- Register a project ("Drone Bee: micro quadcopter"). The supervisor options are Self, Professor, Section (a club), Pre-incubation or TMI.
- ⚠️ "Self" says it costs charges. Register it under a club (AirSoc or ArIES) or a professor instead. That's the main reason to approach them this week.
- 3D prints: you hand in the STL during working hours (keys aren't issued just for printing). So send the thrust-stand STL by Day 4 to have it by Day 9.
Clubs to talk to this week
| Club | Why it matters to you | Contact |
|---|---|---|
| AirSoc (Aero-Modelling & Aerial Robotics Society) | The official drone and aircraft society. They run internal drone lectures (PX4 + ROS2 + Gazebo) and drone projects. Natural home for this build and for the Tinkering Lab registration. | airsoc@iitr.ac.in · GitHub · Instagram @airsoc_iitr |
| ArIES (AI & Electronics Society) | Has a Drones & Robotics vertical. They've done Pluto drones with ArUco markers + RealSense (exactly your v3 idea), a camera gimbal, and a swarm-drone entry at Inter-IIT. They ran an equipment inventory in 2018 (current stock unverified). | New SAC Building · aries@iitr.ac.in · aries.iitr.ac.in |
| MaRS (Models & Robotics Section) | Electronics, CAD and 3D-printing teams, plus a drone-simulation repo. Good for PCB and print help. | 2nd floor, New SAC Building · mars@iitr.ac.in · mars.iitr.ac.in |
A short email works better than a DM. Say who you are, link dronebee.shreyanbuilds.com once it's live, and ask two things: (1) can I register this as a club project on the Tinkering Lab portal, and (2) do you have an oscilloscope or bench supply I could borrow occasionally? A live site with a 3D model is a strong first impression.
Faculty: for later, and for flying legally outdoors
India's Drone Rules 2021, Rule 42, exempt recognised educational institutions from UIN registration and permissions for R&D flights on their own premises in green zones. A professor sponsoring the project is the cleanest legal route for v4's outdoor flights. Approach them after the Egg, with your thrust curve and cube video in hand. Results get replies.
| Who | Why |
|---|---|
| Prof. Sohom Chakrabarty (Electrical) | Sliding-mode and RL-based control, autonomous ground and aerial vehicles, quadrotor papers. The best fit for flight control. |
| Prof. Dharmendra Singh (ECE) | Coordinator of IITR's Drone Research Centre (opened 2021, UAVs for agriculture). |
| Prof. P.M. Pathak (MIED) | Robotics and control, aerial manipulators, UAV trajectories. |
| Prof. M. Felix Orlando (Electrical) | Runs the Advanced Robotics Lab and takes B.Tech interns. |
| Prof. Neetesh Kumar (CSE) | A GPS-denied autonomous UAV project partly unverified. Relevant to v3. |
Flying on campus
- Indoors (your room, a hall) is what the Egg through v3 need. Keep it that way.
- I found no public IITR drone circular. Before any outdoor flight, ask the Chief Security Officer or Dean of Students in writing.
- Airports: Dehradun Jolly Grant is about 45 km in a straight line and Sarsawa AFS about 48 km, both far outside the 8–12 km airport band.
- unverified Roorkee Cantonment borders the campus, and military areas usually carry a red zone. Check the Digital Sky airspace map for your exact spot before v4. This could matter more than the airports.
Money and parts
- Funding (for v5's factory-assembled boards, or a swarm): the TIDES incubator runs an Ignition Program open to undergraduates and NIDHI-PRAYAS prototype grants. iHub DivyaSampark has a CHANAKYA UG Fellowship for cyber-physical-systems ideas. A swarm of 4 cm drones fits that theme.
- Local shops: Roorkee has small electronics stores (e.g. Janta Electronics, Civil Lines; stock unverified). For emergencies, Delhi's Lajpat Rai Market and Bhagirath Palace (watch for counterfeits). The online orders in §5 are still the main route.
- Delivery to Roorkee: no reliable data. One review mentions Robu backorders taking 30+ days, so only buy items shown in stock, as in §5.
